Before I Cut....

When I first started looking for literary agents, a lot of the agency websites were abrasive in outlining submission guidelines. It makes sense because I can imagine how many crackhead proposals they get every week (especially during hard economic times, when so many people respond to unemployment by writing a book). But it also made it somewhat intimidating, reinforcing the image of the dream-crushing agent. Thankfully, I've found many agencies that are a lot more encouraging/empathetic in their submission guidelines, as well as some friendly agents who offer insight on blogs and Twitter.

A very generous agent blog is run by Nathan Bransford. It's got tons of information and is written in a delightfully friendly voice, and the guy says he LOVES receiving query letters! How awesome is that? I know that I said that I was going to focus on trimming down my manuscript, but since Nathan said that an outrageous word count isn't an automatic deal-breaker for him, I just sent him a query letter to see if he might be interested in My Life As Who.  Regardless of whether he bites, I'll definitely keep his blog bookmarked, and will eventually set-up a links section for sites that I've found useful.
